[Locked to Those who Frequent the Tower]

We have kittens. There are lots and lots of kittens, and they appeared in the Tower lobby. We've moved them to one of the conference rooms. There are signs pointing the way to the kittens. If you'd like one, please, come take one. Limit one to an individual for the time being. We'll be providing food and litter boxes and litter and toys. I figure the therapy that owning a kitten can bring will more than be worth how much it'll cost to care for them.

These aren't normal kittens.

They teleport within the space of the room that they're in, and they appear to be invulnerable to damage.

They also seem to have a habit of claiming people. If a few of them get out, they might decide that you're who they want to take care of them. Be warned.

Are you planning on keeping one?

That's a good question. I'll get back to you once I've verified that there's an element of choice involved.

So one's claimed you then?

Unfortunately, there seems to be no choice in that case. I think a kitten might do you good.

I've had a charun, two guardian angels, and now a teleporting kitten. I think I'm about done being claimed.

Jack, a kitten is different than a charun or a guardian angel. It doesn't have complex emotions. It doesn't live or die dependent on whether you live or die. It doesn't feel your pain, and it doesn't want to kill you.

It's simple to take care of. You put out food and water for it, and you make sure it knows which way to the litter box.

In return, it gives you unconditional love without judgment or needing explanations for anything. More than all of that, it chose to claim you as its own. Maybe it likes the way you smell or the way that you look. I've no idea which, but it was this kitten's choice.

I'm failing to see how those situations relate to this one.

And here I thought it was dogs who had unconditional love.

I'm just not used to having pets around. Not the usual kind of pets. As much as teleporting cats can be considered usual.

If you've spent any time with these cats, you'd see that they may get snooty and finicky but they have unconditional love too.

You're sure I'm right and yet? Can you tell me what's going on here? Because something makes me feel like this is more complicated than "I have a cat and don't know what to do with it."

It's not like it isn't a positive change that you could get used to if you give it a chance.

A hundred years living on Earth, Martha Jones, and I never once got in the habit of acting like a normal person with pets and a white picket fence and a knocker on the door. It's a bit of a paradigm-shift for me. Give it time; I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually.

If you'll notice, there isn't a white picket fence or a knocker on our door. Despite the fact that we have pets, they're transporting kittens. I wouldn't call this living like a normal person.

I knew him too. Not well. He was one of the groomsmen at the wedding. I should say groomskitten.

I believe having reminders of those we've lost can be good even when they hurt, but I understand how that makes the situation more complicated. I'd also like to point out that this makes your particular situation less normal than it does for the rest of us. Of all the kittens to find you, it had to be the one that looked exactly like Luke.

If you really wanted, I'm sure we could find some way to keep the kitten away from you. But you should seriously consider keeping it.

Why not. Old dog, new tricks. Maybe I'll get a hobby, too – take up knitting, spend some time volunteering at the old brick church. I'll give it a try.
